(Saturday, December 24, 2022) 00:20

Iranian Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs Ehsan Khandouzi announced the finalization of 16 understandings between Tehran and Beijing to implement the 25-year comprehensive strategic partnership agreement, and added that Presidents Seyed Ebrahim Rayeesi and Xi Jinping will meet in the near future as part of efforts to deepen ties between the two countries.

Iran and China comprehensive cooperation summit kicked off in Tehran on Tuesday in the presence of high-ranking officials of the parties.

Iran's Vice President Mohammad Mokhber and Chinese Vice Prime Minister Hu Chunhua head the Iranian and Chinese delegations in the meeting.

The commitment to the fundamental interests of Iran and China as well as respecting the principles of international law, including respect for territorial integrity, are of particular emphasis to Iran at the meeting.

"Sixteen agreed points between the two countries to implement the comprehensive cooperation program between Iran and China were finalized at the summit," Khandouzi confirmed.

"The areas, including energy, joint investment, financial and currency interactions, as well as strategic projects of transit, infrastructure and ports are on the agenda for discussion," he continued.

"In the upcoming meeting of the presidents, a definite agreement will be made for the implementation of these details," Khandouzi stressed.

Iran and China will provide the ground for implementation [of agreements] "in the shortest possible time", the official continued, adding that good preparations have been made for the upcoming meeting between the presidents of Iran and China.

Khandouzi pointed to the trade between the two countries, noting that Iran and China registered a 20% increase in trade despite international restrictions and sanctions.

Back in March 2021, Iran and China signed a 25-year comprehensive strategic partnership deal to strengthen their long-standing economic and political alliance. The partnership was first announced in 2016, when Xi visited Iran to strengthen Tehran-Beijing ties.

It aims to boost economic cooperation between the two countries and paves the way for Iran’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative, a massive infrastructure project stretching from East Asia to Europe.

Iran and China have enjoyed close ties in recent years, particularly after the United States reinstated sanctions on the Iranian economy in 2018 after unilaterally withdrawing from the Iran nuclear agreement.
